Polar ice caps, last reflecting updates around 2025, noted that since the late 1970s, the Antarctic has gained an average of 7,300 square miles (18,900 km²) of sea ice per year. It also highlighted a record extent on September 19, 2014, exceeding 7.72 million square miles (20 million km²), above the 1981–2010 average of 7.23 million square miles (Polar ice cap).

It highlighted that most climate models indicated a decrease, yet satellite data showed growth.
